The Etna volcano portrait on this tile is made with pulverised lava from the slopes of Etna in Italy. Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, one of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe and one of the world's most active volcanoes. It has been in an almost constant state of activity since 500,000 years ago.

The body of the tile is made of white commercial stoneware, onto which lava is applied to the surface and melted in the kiln at high temperatures, in a process similar to the geological one that formed them in the Earth’s crust. The liquid appearance of the decoration is an immediate reminder of the fire and heat that made both the lava rocks and the tile.

About the collection

The Clara Holt/Unurgent Argilla collaboration is a growing collection of objects decorated with scenes and wild materials foraged on the volcanoes of Pantelleria, Stromboli and Etna. Each decoration is specific to the setting where the materials were collected.
